Standards-Based Learning and Grading
Why Standards-Based?
Standards-based teaching and grading starts off with a learning target for the student. The teacher makes very clear the purpose of the lesson to the student as to what they are expected to know and know how to do. During the entire lesson, students are checked for their understanding and adjustments are made along the way. The reason for this is to be incredibly clear on what is being taught and what students are expected to do. By making expectations clear, students are able to better engage in their learning and meet the learning expectations.
In addition, reporting becomes aligned with those expectations. Instead of just a letter grade, students and parents are provided a report that will specifically lay out on what learning expectations students are weak and strong. With this information, students can work with their teachers to improve their performance by demonstrating their learning on the standards in which they are weak.
