Earlier this week, WHS Guidance Counselor Jamie Dawson (left in the photo) along with our Michigan College Access Network Advisor Chris Coburn attended the 12th annual MCAN Conference at Lake Michigan College.
Dawson tells us, "The conference is an annual convening of MCAN advisors throughout the state and their site supervisors. There were roughly 700 people in attendance at this event from both the K-12 and college sectors. The conference provides professional learning on many topics connected with establishing and maintaining a college-going culture within our school and ensuring equitable college access for all. It was a wonderful experience that provided great content."
The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN), in close partnership with Michigan colleges and universities, seeks to help more Michigan students pursue postsecondary education. Advisors, such as Chris, are recent college graduates who serve alongside high school counselors, principals, and other high school professionals to support students as they complete the college-going steps and prepare for the transition from high school to college.
MCAN Advisors help students submit college or trade school applications and financial aid paperwork, develop a post-secondary plan with each student, organize campus visits, and more.
Chris, Jamie, and Guidance Secretary Jessica Tyler work together daily to make sure all of the students at WHS know about the vast range of scholarships, career opportunities, and educational options open to them after graduation.
