Watervliet Public Schools is seeking an outstanding Utility/Groundskeeper.  

The City of Watervliet is located in southwest Michigan, approximately 15 miles east of the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor metropolitan area, in Berrien County and 35 miles west of Kalamazoo, MI.  The school district serves approximately 1,500 PreK-12 students with grades 9-12 high school enrollment of approximately 440.  

Required Qualifications

  • High School Graduate.

  • Certification of good health, signed by a physician.

  • Ability to read and comprehend warning labels and basic equipment operating instructions and ability to write reports as needed.

  • Ability to move 150 pounds with assistance provided if requested.

  • Ability to perform minor electrical plumbing and mechanical repairs associated with the job.

  • Ability to operate floor cleaning equipment, lawn mowing, snow removal and other common equipment associated with the job.

  • Demonstrate the ability to work successfully without direct supervision.

  • Possess no physical or mental restrictions that would, without reasonable accommodation, prevent the performance of the essential job functions and responsibilities.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Mow and trim all grounds.

  • Apply weed killer and fertilizer as needed.

  • Plow and remove snow using school equipment. Apply salt as needed.

  • Clean up leaves and debris from school grounds.

  • Help to prepare and maintain sports fields for athletic events.

  • Operate and maintain the irrigation system.

  • Request and receive supplies and equipment, and maintain necessary inventories.

  • Deliver Food from the central kitchen to the elementary schools.

  • Deliver interschool mail on a set schedule.

  • Run errands as needed by the Maintenance Director.

  • Fill in for absent custodians as needed.

  • Aid in performing vehicle repairs.

  • Wash and wax school vehicles, including school busses.

  • Wash, clean and maintain ground equipment.

  • Cover the transportation office and radio when needed.

  • Drive a school bus where there is a shortage of drivers.

  • Perform other such tasks as directed by the principals, maintenance director,and building custodians.

  • Demonstrate professional behavior in manor and appearance.

  • Work cooperatively with building staff.

  • Regular, timely and predictable attendance.
