Five years ago, Kindergarten Teacher Mrs. Angela Schmidt was inspired and shared an idea with her colleagues. Since then, the Cereal Box Domino Run has become an annual event. This year, for the fifth consecutive year, Watervliet South Elementary received its largest community donation yet—1,529 boxes of cereal.
While Mrs. Schmidt does all the behind the scenes coordination, she says, "It's the staff and the community who truly bring the event to life." The domino run was inspired from one of Mrs. Schmidt favorite books, Heartprints by P.K Hallinan. "The event teaches our students, staff, and community the domino effect of kindness and how we can leave heartprints behind!"
Every box of cereal was donated and every box will help feed a family in need. What at great message to share and pass along to our youth of kindness, compassion and empathy.
On Tuesday February 25th, South Elementary staff and some students will get on a bus after school and deliver all the donated 1,529 cereal boxes to local food banks. Donations will be made to: Catholic Community Center in St Joe, St. Joseph Catholic Community Church in Watervliet, Harford United Methodist Church, Hope Resources in Coloma and Watervliet Free Methodist Church (Living Water Food Pantry). Total donated for the past 5 years, 6,214 boxes of cereal.
